Jagex has announced a Smithing and Mining rework at Runefest this year during the Summit Reveal so lets talk about it! It had huge supports in the polls and everyone is giving their ideas on how to fix the skills overall, but what does feasible rework actually look like? Mod Rice has been Mr. Popular this week and talking about all his rough ideas on different Podcasts and it seems he has a good approach. Rebuilding both these skills from the ground up is a near impossible task, so what can we do? Personally I am in favor, of leaving things relatively the same except rebalancing some level requirements and moving ammo crafting from crafting to smithing to give it more end game use. I don’t think making rune plate bodies craft-able at low levels will automatically just fix smithing and make it enjoyable. Smithing could use some exp balancing as well and maybe few more methods. Mining on the other hand, I don’t actually think is in a terrible position other than some bad level balances. This should be an easy fix for them.

If they're going to buff early-mid game mining methods I'd love to see a buff to volcanic mine across the board. Right now it's decidedly okay pre-85 but after 85 it's personally the best way to train mining (team based minigame, slightly engaging every few minutes, but otherwise INCREDIBLY idle) with an insane XP rate per click. I'd love to see it gain more prevalence in training because I feel like it's still a really niche activity gatekept by Those Who Know
Ive had an idea for a smithing addon for a long time- a new avenue for account progression- enemy and drop table modulation. Imagine if you could, after completing introductory quests like goblin diplomacy or the lost tribe, use your skill in smithing to modify existing tools and give them to these various races. In return you would open up new enemy variants and slots on their drop tables. Maybe now the goblins in Lumbridge sometimes spawn with a pickaxe in hand visually and drop a few coal ( I imagine it would need to use the Superior Spawn system from slayer) Now extend that idea to the many races of Gielinor; Vampyres after completing sins of the father, Ogers after Watchtower, Monkeys after Monkey madness I, etc. This would open up an entire reward space without touching on the core of skill and allow smithing to be useful in an account's progression. For mining all you would need to do would be require the player to mine rocks with a handful of new tools or methods to be used in this new side-area of smithing, then bam, mining is now useful too. Let me know what you think, Gnome.
I threw a brief mention of it, but, breaking down dragon metal weapons/armour into usable metal bits to then reforge into dragon bolts would be so nice. They could make it a viable training method and it'd give use to late game bosses dropping dragon armour/weapons.
i don't understand why they need to rework these. even after watching this. the other items tab exists and i think the "meme" of needing 99 for rune platebody is kinda funny. "i can now finally make a rune platebody"
i remember when rs3 added the new ores. or remember them being in there (was really young). i know it sounds dumb but am really afraid of osrs turning into rs3.
(to me most skills are irrelevant and that's fine? i never really did any smithing pre osrs and not really in osrs either unless maxing/going for a level for something and that's a-okay to me?)
Not sure what other people think, but a simple change could be to allow you to drop ores and some gp at the blast furnace and they will smelt them for you. At whatever rate is fair per hour. You get no xp for the smelting but it saves you time while you go and smith the stuff at an anvil.
Basically similar to the herb cleaning / unfinished potion making at those npcs, but it would still take time rather than being instant.
to preface my opinion, im a newer player (started playing about 4 years ago), and i mainly play on an iron, so my opinion is probably uninformed about the economy of the game.
honestly the biggest thing id change about mining specifically is just make the chance of mining rocks scale more. its insane that mining coal in the mining guild (invis +7 boost) with a celestial ring (invis +4 boost) at levels 80+ can still take you several seconds to actually get an ore. id also maybe make regular rocks more like amethyst mining, where you can get a couple ores before the rock actually depletes. these changes might make actually mining the higher tier rocks scattered around the world somewhat worth interacting with, since for anyone not playing a snowflake account, anything above gold ore is literally just not worth mining directly.
For smithing, im a lot less sure what i would do, but i had a couple ideas. firstly, i do think the skill needs one or two more ways to train it, thats a given. additionally, at the moment smithing at an anvil is slooowwwww… i like the idea of the smithing outfit from giants foundry saving a tick on smithing actions. maybe you could have a scaling chance of you saving a tick on a given smithing action as you increase your level, with this working on top of the smithing outfit. i dont know if that would be too strong, but it would make getting higher levels in the skill actually worthwhile, since processing your bars would be much less annoying. maybe at level 99 it maxes out at 80%, but becomes 100% with the skillcape or smth. i would also change the level requirements for making everything much more compressed, like maybe you unlock rune platebodies at level 90 instead of 99. like sure it would still be useless to make them for personal use at that level, but i dont really think youll find a good sweet spot for that without reworking every drop table like what was done in rs3. i also dont think having to get rune armor from shops and monster drops is a bad thing, esp since even on an iron you likely arent using it for very long. my last idea is to take the orikalkum gravel added with venators, add it to a some more late-midgame and endgame drop tables, and allow it it be used to make an alternative end game ammo, maybe similar/slightly higher ranged strength to amethyst, but with an accuracy bonus on them. the idea being that current dragon ammunition looks like teeth or claws, so making the orikalkum into actual metal ammo makes it fly straighter or something. maybe you could rename current dragon ammo to "dragon tooth" ammo. idk im just spitballing with this last one im not a game balanceist.
you unlock granite mining at 45 mining… they have like 50 levels to add a better tick manip/high apm method that's more rewarding
a mining/smithing commission system could be cool. an npc would tell you to mine some things and then smith them into something and give it to them for an xp drop
Your platebody calc missing a core function of rs3 smithing – the +1, +2, etc.You use more bars and slightly increase the smithing time.
Perhaps putting it in xp per hit will explain it better.
Base rune: 8xp per hit. +3 rune: 23.7. There's multipliers to make it faster, but the +3 version gives 3 times the xp/hr. The entire focus was NOT making 4 platebodies in a row as per your CG example, so to use it as a comparison feels exceedingly disingenuous; Mod Rice isn't going to take one part and leave the rest and make a worse overall experience.
And "BIS" masterwork required the previous BIS armour, *and the previous BIS before that*.
Y'know, breaking down bandos for torva? Same concept, except you had to break down 2 sets of armour.
And high level bars don't take forever to make. AND it hasn't been bis for ages. Making MW armour sucks though, that's for sure,
Please keep pushing being able to make dragon ammunition! So overdue
I think they need to change how skilling mini games work in general to give best xp throughout different tiers of levels so that you can both spread the longevity of the games and better incorporate ways to skill between those said levels out in the world.
Making runeplate body at 99 smithing gets memed on all the time but I honestly think it is perfectly fine there and we don't need to overhaul the entire system just so we can make it at 50. Thing about rune armour and any armour tier below it is that you can just buy them at shops and get them as drops extremely easily, even as an iron. By the time you get the smithing and mining levels, you are already looking at the next upgrade aka dragon, barrows, perilous moons, bandos.
I would prefer if they focused on adding useful upgrades and specific milestones that are relevant to that tier and can only be obtained by smithing. Amethest and dragon ammunition for example as Gnomonkey mentioned. And 99 smithing requirement for rune platebody can just be memed on until the end of time.
Been saying for a while that they wouldn't touch this because of alch prices, it basically underpins the entire economy, huge risk imo
Very curious how OSRS's mining/smithing rework happens as an RS3 player. Smithing in RS3 is a total slog, 100% agree.
I just want to be able to deposit coal into a furnace so I can smith an inventory of mith, addy, and rune instead of blast furnace
I've been playing Dragon Quest 11 recently and their whole mini-forge system to create and upgrade gear would be pretty fun to copy- I mean, "reference".
PLEASE GOD LET US MAKE DRAGON AMMO
masterwork melee armour is t90 armour, that can be further upgraded to t92 using material from breaking down Torva and Malevalent armour sets, which aside from upgraded stats, grants it an amazing defensive set effect. I agree that many aspects of RS3's smithing rework were pretty hit or miss, but I hope mod Rice adapts that crossover point between skilling and pvm, both using pvm drops to augment/upgrade smithed armour and using the smithing skill itself + significant materials to upgrade pvm gear. Imagine a rune golem boss that drops concentrated runite ore that lets you upgrade rune equipment from t40 to t50 with appropriate stat boosts, or a complex crafting tree that lets you fortify inquisitors gear using chromium ingots + material from breaking down multiple barrows sets.
I really hate the rs3 rework, dont touch rune smithing just add similarly strong armour you can smith at lower levels instead, kind of like what mixed hide is for range and crafting. Is there really even a big demand to be able to smith runite armour at level 40 who actually cares about that
the worst part is that theyd have to put in like dragonite ore or something ike that. do people even use dragon aside from the boots and bolts/ every bis is above dragon
The point about ammunition and lower requirements for that along with creating dragon ammunition is huge.
I genuinely would love to see major skilling overhauls. PvM in OSRS has progressed to such an insane degree from back when the most challenging boss in the game was Jad but othe than a few niche skilling minigames the skilling content is all the same. Genuinely feel like skilling should parallel PvM completely in that the "classic" ways of skilling should just exist to train the skill (akin to afking crabs technically still being 'combat') and have a bunch of high level skilling content that's actually rewarding and interconnected and ties into a whole meaningful skilling economy rather than just bot-tier content for crafting level 40 junk.
Smithing in rs3 isnt even bad xp though. It might make items slow and be pretty afkish but it's decent xp rates and because items time is based off bars, you can make any item and get relatively similar xp rates in any given tier.
Lets add armour trimming
I really like the idea you brought up about making your own dragon equipment. I think this could be added through some special mining minigame which lets you mine ancient dragon parts or fossils and then using these dragon parts or shards in combination with other components to create dragon equipment. This would solve another problem with drop tables. Could add these parts or shards on various tables.
Buff blastmine again!
Yes im so glad were wasting dev time, changing the entire game and fixing something that isnt broken so irons can still buy a rune platebody from a shop for 60k! Jagex needs to stop listening to redditors crying about nothing
Ore what?
