What happened to Baldi’s Basics? In fact, what happened to Baldi’s Basics plus? What went right and what went wrong?

In this video we will take a look through the history of Baldi’s Basics and the development journey of Baldi’s Basics Plus.

This is a story of a game developer going from a day job bagging groceries to a full time solo developer. It’s not been an easy ride but it has ultimately been a productive one and Baldi’s Basics Plus to this day appears to be on track.

This video is similar to that of a What Went Wrong style video. I didn’t feel that the story was deep enough to turn it into a what went wrong, however I do feel that it was worth at least bringing together the top level timeline of what happened to a game that now sits in many people’s libraries.

  1. Something I like about your videos is that they're well structured, almost academically so, but the language and tone used are very much casual – this makes them super easy and enjoyable to follow even though I, in my heart of hearts, don't really give a damn about Baldi's Basics. It's such a better feeling than trying to follow longer videos which almost always devolve into unstructured rambling

  2. Looked at the thumbnail, checked the steam page and what do you know its 97% positive. The 10.1 hour negative review doesnt even exist, never has.

I understand engagement, creative liberty and all that, but baiting drama with someones livelihood is not that tasteful. It has become a recurring theme on your channel that "okay this isnt actually a sad story but lets paint it as one because its more popular"

I understand that negativity outperforms every time, but theres a bunch of games that you could cover in that vein, we all know people will absolutely demolish an hour long video of a niche game they never heard of.

I honestly hope you spare a moment to consider this, and that it comes across as a constructive critique instead of a crybaby comment 😀 Take care

  3. The Kickstarter taking so long makes sense when you remember it was a free game that appealed to people who couldn't afford games and also most of the Youtube audience interested were children- mixing the two together you get a very tiny amount of actual money you can muster for all the attention it got.

  4. wincing every time i hear the word publisher because he is already well known he doesnt need someone to leverage control of his IP or trap him into hostile contracts

  5. According to the metrics I've seen the game is doing fine with a fairly good review score. I imagine this is a case of their audience outgrowing the product. That or a shitpost game gaining a lot of popularity and the creator not understanding why it was popular to begin with.

  6. It feels like the dev remained humble and didn't get a huge ego that led to a crash out like you see with some indie devs. He really is just doing his best, but as a complete newbie to game development his best is slow at times.

  7. jesus i was like 15 years old when i played the original version, insane the kickstarter game's still getting updated, i legit forgot about this game until seeing this thumbnail on my youtube feed

  8. I think the timeline of an 8 year development schedule for a new game from a new dev seems very reasonable. I'll be happy to see 1.0 happen even though I've never played Baldi's Basics.
I respect Micah for his resolve.

  9. I have played many indie games, and this is no different. I genuinely like the game, people worry too much on if its gonna be finished or not instead of just enjoying the game that is present. I've much enjoyed the current state of the game and the fact that the dev still has been updating and talking about progress is a bonus. Some people seem not to realize that there is only one dev working on this game
