i feel like soulshale is probably something like netherrack, given the naming convention being that shale is a kind of rock, it’s breakable by hand, i expect this is going to be fairly common in the sift. at minimum, probably like andesite and friends or blackstone, something that spawns in pockets or blobs but isn’t necessarily what a whole chunk is made out of.

the debug world isn't something they modify though right? the debug world can have blocks from mods, iirc. It's generated by the game, not by mojang. like it literally can't not have a blockstate that exists in mc

I suspect soulshale will just be the sift's stone equivalent. probably the chiselled soulshale is used in the process of opening the portal, and that's why it appears in ancient city loot, and why they added it early

Regarding the voting thing: I spent a few months covering a basalt dealta in stone slabs to spawn proof it. If magma cubes comes up, it's an automatic win.

yeah it wouldn't make sense that you have to use soulshale blocks to make the portal to the sift because there's already a portal frame in the deep dark/ancient city

Broadly speaking, slate is a result of shale undergoing metamorphism ! Deepslate and Soulshade could potentially be related, which has interesting lore implications
I theorize that traveling to the sift actually brings you far back in time, and the regular stone above y=0 is just the resulting sedimentary deposits of an incredible amount of time passing.
Then again I haven't touched a single version that came out after 1.21.1 so I'm not gonna pretend this all makes sense lol

Some mobs from the Sift are going to turn into blocks on the overworld the way mobs from the nether become zombified.
I called it on the which sift mobs from dungeon are coming to Minecraft video.
Its going to introduce a fun mechanic to breed mobs then turn into blocks to farm them.
Other mobs are going to become corrupted versions of them like the Singer turning into the Warden and the other mobs thing with protruding things becoming a Shrieker block.
soulshale is most likely the primary stone type that will be found in the sift
