  1. While I somewhat agree with the “clunky writing” conclusion, because let’s face it that label is charitable, I don’t think it’s the whole story. The existence of progressive Ideology in Veilguard was more heavily criticized than in previous titles because while the wokeness remained all the other supporting pillars that make a game began to crumble and be stripped away. It’s more of a target because its cover has been peeled away. And it’s fair to be frustrated that while good gameplay, writing, level design and characters have all gradually disappeared ideology has not. It gives the understandable impression that the right qualities are not being prioritized. BG3 was progressive as hell but it was a GOOD GAME made by people who wanted to make a GOOD video game. Woke can never make a bad game good and a good game bad. So whatever the reason, BioWare starting making games that didn’t appeal to consumers and they didn’t make money because of that. It’s not unexpected they got the axe, frankly, it surprising they got this many chances in an industry that hardly suffers ONE failure.

  2. ah yes it totally wasnt because of bioware making mediocre games with a lot of DEI garbage and telling the fans of the franchises and target audience to fuck off if they didnt like it.

what did you said at that time? "go woke, go bro-err top of the charts"…

so did those games went "top of the charts" by selling a lot but for some reason still have to close the studio because of no money or were you just being the classic lying dishonest hack "journalist" everyone honest knows you are

  3. Sure you can say culture warriors tend to pick on games that were gonna fail anyway , but i think thats not fully true , games like concord had as much marketing push from Sony as any of theor big exclusives but no one wanted to play as "fat Berta" for lack of better term to describe some of the character designs , and to pretend Dragon Age Veilguards word of mouth negative impact had nothing to do with its precievwd "wokness" is sticking head in sand , yes it has bad writing and acting and dialogue , but that bad dialogue on top having all the "woke" stuff really adds to the punch and is what made the game so meme-able (in a negative way) , to pretend concord having characters of heroic proportion and cool designs instead of cast of ugly cosplayers wouldnt improve the games reception , and same for veilguards writing , is false , it wouldve sold way better , the reason "chuds" still buy and play Baldurs Gate is that its falvour of "woke" is done competently , where its just another detail in an introcate ,well done story/gameplay , while in bad games it sticks out like sore thumb

  4. There was some pushback by jez of windows central that eday cost was not just eday, but tools, and other work that coalition did as well. Ie. helping state of decay 3 with the engine, and other customizations that benefits multiple games, and the cost of eday itself is a lot less than the number you said. Can you comment on that or make a video?

  5. It's so cool that Shrier shares (for free!!) relevent prior articles in the "show notes." I haven't been reading those for a bit, because previously, when I've read them, they seemed to mostly be about the same thing as that day's video. However, since there's no video on Anthem's failure, I am so grateful for the free article he wrote about it. I've gotten so used to getting my gaming news from third parties who review or summarize articles that journalists produce. Getting it "straight from the source" and reading the article myself and forming my own opinions on it is a refreshing change. Shrier's channel has renewed my appreciation for journalists, not just gaming industry ones, but for all journalists. It must take a lot of time, effort, knowledge, and experience, and Shrier has made me acutely aware of this.

  6. Bioware deserved this unfortunately and hopefully the employees who are talented and lost their jobs find new avenue to work hard and express their creativity

  7. In the early 2010s i did a presentation for a college class about the fall of Pandemic Studios (it was a video game history class and we had to talk about studios that were defunct). I found that info about John Riccitiello's private equity fund acquisition and talked about it. I had never heard that story before and I was mind blown. I pieced it together from Wikipedia and some news articles. I was mind blown. That history right there is the problem with business people running creative studios. They don't care at all about actually making something good. Except for maybe Strauss Zelnick.

  8. Damn dude. It sounds like at every turn Bioware was just getting shafted when it came to game development. And then when those games came out and were poorly received, the MBA's took it as a sign to invest less and less in the company while demanding more. Look I know it was the OG owners' rights to sell their company to a VC firm. But it still hurts that companies can buy developers who make good games and then just dissolve the company when they don't perform how the companies want. I hope things change for the better soon.
