Btw my Switch oled is good for now🧐😅💪
Greetings🕹🤘👋
Omg im gonna die if you say pokopia (pronounced like Utopia) as "poko-pia" again lol
Good console, terrible business model for us customers. Nintendo decided to tell game preservation to fuck off, so I tell them to fuck off. I was really looking forward to it and even thinking of buying one, but I'm glad I waited to watch the whole presentation and the analysis by experts, because I dodged a bullet. Fuck them. Release proper physical media or gtfo.
And before anyone tells me that pc games have been digital only for years, first, not all of them, and second, PC is an open system. Worst case scenario you can pirate the games. You can preserve them.
Didn't particularly expect to want to argue that the Switch port of Bayonetta 2 is worth more than Yoshi and the Mysterious Book when I started watching, but here we are.
Whatnot is definitely the perfect way to buy stolen goods!
4:50 I can't believe Scott called me out
You know what could br a life changeng Game?
A reeeeaally good Pokemon 3d Open World. Breath of the wild Style. Yeah but we all know that's too much to ask from the biggest franchise in history
0:56
4:06 Honestly? Basically most late PS4 games are just PS5 games that were cut down significantly for the horrible PS4 hardware. So I don't think it's a fair comparison.
The way Scott pronounces Pokopia is hilarious
Switch
Nintendo: let’s give them everything we got!
Switch 2
Nintendo: Eh here’s a new console.
Oh Scott, how did you know I wanted you to compare the first years between the switch 1 and 2?? First year in comparison yeeeeah! Now rank the generations!
To be honest, 2017 was good even out of the Nintendo ecosystem. Nier Automata, Persona 5, Hollow Knight, Yakuza 0, Nioh, Ys 8, Sonic Mania, Gravity Rush 2, Cuphead, Resident Evil 7. Like 2017 was just indisputably a good ass year to be a fan of video games. Even more so after the kinda weak year that was 2016.
I probably would have paired Kirby Air Riders with ARMS since your criticism of Air Riders kind of match ARMS main critcisms
Wii U's failure and the timing of the original Switch launch allowed Nintendo to do something they've never done before:
Release a new mainline 3D Zelda (what had been Wii U's Zelda, but became popularly associated as a Switch launch title, unlike, say, Twilight Princess, where many legitimately viewed the Gamecube version as definitive over the Wii release,) a "new" Mario Kart (in actuality a years old game, but to non-Wii-U owners, it was new,) and then a brand new mainline 3D Mario, all in the first 8 months of the system's life. That had never happened for any Nintendo console going back to N64, and may well never happen again.
In contrast, Switch 2's launch fell between development cycles. EPD Tokyo, normally responsible for the 3D Mario that shows up within 11-12 months of a console launch, were still winding down DK Bananza after eight years. TotK was just two years old. And while it launched with a new Mario Kart, it was experimental and somewhat divisive among fans. (And its price point when purchased unbundled didn't help matters.)
There was no way Switch 2's year one lineup was ever going to be able to compete in people's minds with 1) the initial novelty of the first Switch which felt like magic at the time but now is a standard concept people have acclimated to, 2) its 1-2-3 punch of new 3D Zelda, new 3D Mario, and MK8D, and 3) general optics as the followup to what was viewed as a failure, and people's willingness to get excited about Nintendo again on that basis, as opposed to Switch 2 just being a continuation or recapitulation of that in some people's eyes.
Because of all that, there's this psychological factor of, if a Wii U game releases on Switch 1, it's "the better version" or "new to me because I never owned Wii U," vs Switch 2 editions of last gen games not getting to count as or feel "new" in the same way, and even being sometimes framed pejoratively as "not exclusive." (Even though for someone who didn't own Switch, buying Switch 2 and playing, say, BotW and TotK Switch 2 editions, is essentially comparable to someone not owning Wii U and playing MK8 on Switch.)
Despite this, they've basically managed to still put out a new first party or co-published game almost every month for what will be 18 months next month, even excluding S2Es. Which in terms of actual software output, is pretty comparable. Whether someone finds the individual games that make up that output volume satisfactory is an individual decision of course.
Switch 1 launched with a crazy impressive line up because Nintendo were desperate to become relevant again, so they came out swinging and knocked it out of the park. And that absolutely means something.
…But I liked Switch 2’s launch year way better. When I first got my Switch 1, I got Shovel Knight and Sonic Mania because I was not a Zelda guy and nothing that was out at the time caught my eye otherwise. And for that whole year, I got Mario and Rabbids, Mario Kart, and Mario Odyssey. All solid to incredible games, but there wasn’t anything from Nintendo I wanted besides Mario stuff.
Whereas with Switch 2, I got Donkey Kong Bananza- which, in my disgustingly biased opinion, wipes the floor with Mario Odyssey as most every Donkey Kong platformer has done with a contemporary Mario game. A game I waited 11 years for after Tropical Freeze really sold me on Donkey Kong as a series, so that alone won me over for Switch 2.
And otherwise, Mario Kart World is a more interesting Mario Kart. Kirby and the Forgotten Land getting DLC was cool and Air Riders is a fun surprise and fun to play with friends. Similarly, Mario Wonder’s DLC is pretty cool. And Pokemon Legends Z-A is another Legends game, and I really like those. And even beyond Nintendo, Pac-Man World 2 got a really solid remake, Yooka-Laylee got a really solid remaster, and Bubsy 4D gave Bubsy an actually good game.
I have very much appreciated Switch 2 better personally. I get why people wax nostalgic for 2017 as much as they do, because Nintendo did their job in impressing people in the Switch 1. And I appreciate how we wouldn’t have a Switch 2 launch as good for me without a Switch 1 launch that impressed so many people like it did.
Now, if the Tropical Freeze port for Switch came out in the launch year, we might have a different conversation on our hands. But that’d have to wait for when we compare year twos.
Switch 1 first year was all about Nintendo returning and it had the in house games to support this.
Switch 2 first year was all about 3rd party modern games returning to a Nintendo system. If Nintendo was launching Zelda and Mario, they would overshadow 3rd party older games (but good) and basically would screw all devs decided supporting them. Now on year 2, I think Nintendo will deliver on Switch 2.
It’s just an asynchrony between the two systems. I have a feeling that Switch 2 could actually has a chance to become even bigger than the original Switch.
13:00 "it is just a wet fart, like everything functions and it's designed competently, like everything works, but it kinda reminds me of sonic forces" is a weird ass way to define "wet fart"
Why does he pronounce Pokopia like that
Quality >>>> quantity
I'm not going to lie, I never bought a Switch 1. I just never felt like it was that interesting and its hardware was so underpowered. I had skipped out on Nintendo consoles ever since the Wii era.
But the Switch 2? It's backwards compatibility with Switch 1's library + all the emulated prior Nitnendo consoles? Plus the fact that it might soon be the only console with physical games? That made me actually buy it. It's just nice to have two consoles worth of playable games and it is finally competent enough hardware wise that I don't feel like buying a gimped Playstation 4.
I suppose a lot of these arguments actually could be made for Xbox Series S/X, as that is compatible with Xbone titles and also had a lot of digital 360 ports and so on. But I never got into Xbox and their first party line up never compared to Nintendo. Ultimately I am still more of a PC gamer these days anyway, so if I had to have one console, it would be Nintendo for the exclusives.
33:33 yo an actual nuanced take, those are illegal on the internet /j
(I agree though, yeah)
Imo S2 wins, but they’re both top tier
Fire Emblem fans eating good
Flip Wars mentioned! I remember seeing it as a companion to Bomberman, and was fascinated by the split second of footage during the initial sizzle reel
ARMS was so ass I went to GameStop and traded it for a Smash Ultimate GameCube controller.
The fact that they haven't released a new mainline Mario game since 2017 is absolutely insane.
Your plugging Whatnot what giant con-artist
Every time I hear Scott saying Poko-PI-a, I scream a bit inside.
4:40 for what its worth, mario kart world is a life changing game to me but if I talk about why ill see insane.
The Switch 1 wins because of 1-2 Switch obviously
NPCs will return in Averages : Doomsday
To me dk bananza was as good/polished/fun as botw or Mario. It’s perfect to me. I think I had more fun with that than almost any other game I’ve ever played. Just feels so good.
