There seemed to be a lot of confusion in chat over the difference between "white elephant" and "secret Santa"
Secret Santa, you're given a specific person to get a gift for but they don't know who is getting their gift. They have to get a gift for someone else, and so on. Each person makes a list of things they would like that you're given and they don't know until they open the gift, who it's from. Sometimes there's a small game of guessing who got the gift for you, but for the most part, it's just meant to be nice.
White elephant, you aren't buying a gift for a specific person. You get a gift in general. You can get whatever and a lot of people choose to get pranky or silly gifts. Everyone's gift goes in a pile and you do some type of roll or draw to see who picks first. You can grab whatever gift but someone else can choose to steal your gift instead of grabbing from the pile. There's usually only a certain amount of swaps you're allowed per gift but a lot of people make their own rules. I've been to parties with no limit to swaps and people getting multiple gifts while some people get none (those suck) and I've been to parties where everyone gets a gift and there are limited swaps (this is more fair imho)
