  1. Disappointed that he didn't release the source code for this and his reasoning doesn't really work for me.
The only way things like this stay alive is by keeping the knowledge of how they work available.
Plus you never know when someone is going to heel turn and suddenly slap a network intrusion tool into something, especially nowadays.

  2. I love this for the people but I'm sticking with bad update. Bad update allows me to natively install my games to a solid-state drive. The boost to game loading times add 1% lows is absolutely incredible.

  3. 13:38 Nah. That's a ridiculous excuse. People will always damage their system by not being careful, and you can use a similar justification for everything not being open-source and we wouldn't accept it there anymore than we should here. There's no excuse to hide the source code. Open source is the way to go for everything.

  4. i love that this is possible now but my only concern is purely down to the hard drive. if that hard drive dies for any reason randomly your whole console could be done unless your skilled enough to refalsh the nand. maybe a future piece of software or a script to setup the hard drive from a pc in cases like that may be useful. theoretically i could make a backup image of the hard drive with linux and reflash it on another drive but im unsure if that would work. ill be keeping a close eye on this and see what comes of it. bad avatar is good enough for my use cases but ill be keeping a close eye on this scene

  5. There's a reason your PC gets continual security updates for its operating system.

It's because no matter how secure your software is, eventually someone will find an exploit to bypass its security. It's why you can't use an old operating system anymore without significant risk to your personal data and continued function of your device.

I learned a long time ago to stop doubting what can be hacked. "Never thought possible" are three silly words that don't apply to the hacking and modding scenes. It's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when". "When" will someone talented come along and care enough to find an exploit. "When" will they share it.

Consoles are designed by humans, who have limited sight into the future and who are prone to making mistakes… and all it takes is one teensy, tiny little mistake in your design for someone to go "oh, if I do this, I can bypass this whole security section". And then you get things like the 3DS Soundhax softmod, where you have the 3DS Sound app play a file that causes a system vulnerability and suddenly you're tapping into the system's deeper layers and installing custom firmware. That's how I hacked my original 2DS. Easiest softmod ever. Made hacking my Wii look like solving the DaVinci Code by comparison, it was so easy.
