I liked playing through Demon Souls remaster. It is very pretty. But I like every other Souls game much more because their gameplay is more refined.
I remember it took me years to beat demon souls. Not in 1 playthrough but several over years and one day I started new and beat it over 2 or 3 days. Managed to 1 try nearly every boss never having fought them once before hand just blind. Like something had clicked randomly. Such a fun game but definitely more punishing compared to dark souls or others.

Man, the enemy designs in Demon's Souls look way more fucked up than in Dark Souls
One thing I always found endearing about Demon's Souls is how each zone is kinda tailor made to support a specific build type. Strength build? Stonefang Tunnels. Dex build? Shrine of Storms. Magic build? Tower of Latria. Faith build? Valley of Defilement. While there is some overlap, for instance Shrine of Storms also has some real good stuff for int and fai builds, overall it's a pretty good pattern to remember. It's neat on repeat playthroughs to rush a certain zone early to get a build online, and it then enabling you stomp the other routes

a slight correction for the opening: the game gets harder if you die in human form, not just dying in general. it can also get harder if you kill human npcs too
