Well, that came out of nowhere! With over a month to go until Grand Theft Auto 6 finally releases, Rockstar has blessed us with an actual launch trailer. The gameplay first focus of the Extended Look is out, the return to cinematic camera angles returns but there’s still plenty to discuss from a technical point of view, including what seems to be the very first DF shower scene tech analysis…

  1. “animation stutter”…which one? That's really nitpicking, and I'm not saying this to defend Rockstar; it reminds me of the comment, “The Switch 2's screen isn't that great” ,obviously because they're playing on an ultra-expensive OLED monitor. Comments like that make the public increasingly picky about silly things.

  2. For the QSSR part, I wonder if QSSR could be use like DLAA, keeping 1440p but helping a bit with ghosting/smeariness issue. I guess they'll use TAA as always but anything that could help image quality even more is a plus

  3. Why the hell is this game not running in HDR!? Why the hell is it not running at 60fps or at least 40fps!? The more I see of this game the less impressed and the less excited I get about it.

  4. It would be interesting to see a channel that focuses on mainly racing game review just that aspect of the game. Especially in comparison to the last one's Racing features.

Other than that – it doesn't speak to me much so far.. I do kinda like the setting I guess, but the characters seem as is often the case with Rockstar games not ones I want to spend a lot of hours with.

  5. At tthis point, i don't think base ps5 version should be launched. Its blurry as fuck, seem some fps drops too… Just give us the better version = pc and we're good.

  6. I really don't mean to self-promote, but for all people commenting they still not seeing the animation issue: I uploaded a short video to my channel that visualizes the problem.

  7. 8:12 But metroid Prime 4 still misses out on increased HDR details and the entire HuD is way too bright with no way to adjust it. So it's still such a weak and lazy HDR implementation, that makes it frustrating to accept. It could be so much better without a lot of work.

  8. I agree that the motion stutter (I wouldn't exactly call it animation stutter) is caused by a lower-resolution camera path/track being linear-interpolated, which would mean the problem is just the level of 'subdivisions' applied to the path. That is fixed by increasing the rate of position updates to as often or more often than frames update. (exactly like adding smoothing/subdivisions to a 3D model until it's denser than the render resolution and appears fully smooth).

The risk in assuming this is representative of the game is that it's likely to be a value they can easily increase when rendering offline footage for a trailer, though I guess the same would be said about polygon counts and LOD in general, and that seems consistent with the gameplay reveal so it could go either way. It just depends how expensive the resolution of camera paths is to the overall game, and whether they're able to increase that parameter without taxing the overall performance budget. (Path/spline detail is not very costly so it does lean in favor of this showing a permanent fix after all)

  9. Rockstar has a persistent, taceable issue for decades across many games
New powerful AI agents become available
    Issue seems resolved within weeks

DF: "I don't know how they did it."

  10. I think it's RT in the sniper rifle lens and not an image because it doesn't appear to be static. I can't imagine how they could have made a static image maintain spacial consistency while the scope itself moves around

  11. I don't get it, in the deep dive, they've shown off an earlier less polished build of the game, if you don't think they have then you're slow. The game on launch will look significantly better, like the shimmering reflections on the van in the car park for example, that'll be gone in the launch version, I'll come back to this comment on tbe 19th an eat my words if it hasn't.

  12. Honestly I feel like DF team could go far, far more in-depth for the GTA6 analyses you make.

There's so much more to talk about many different graphical aspects of this game and the innovations seen here and yet every time it's the shortest, most surface-level coverage it could possibly be, simply brushing over everything.

I for example am not on the team, but if you were to ask me, I'd say there's at least 20-30 genuinely interesting graphical details to point out and talk about just in this new trailer alone. But I guess that's just me.

  13. If the internal resolution is 1440p, then surely there's enough headroom for at least a 40fps mode if they go down to 1080p or 900p (and then use QSSR to upscale to 1440p or something)?
