Super Mario Bros. Any% Speedrun in 4:54.299 *WR*

First ever 4:54.2xx and the FINAL tenth second barrier that Any% will ever see! While doing a Halloween stream and being dressed up as Mario, my supporters donated $1,000 for me to do a Mario impression for the entire stream, which is why I stayed in character the whole run for entertainment. Funnily enough, this one decision made me way less nervous since I actually DIDN’T want to get world record while doing this, so the larp strat ended up working! This run is now just 2 frames (33 milliseconds) away from absolute perfection, with the only frame losses being 1 in first room and 1 in second room. 4:54.265 / No L+R TAS tie is on the horizon, and I have absolutely no doubt I’ll achieve this very soon! Be sure to tune into the streams if you want to witness the biggest world record this game has ever seen live!

This run was played on a MiSTer FPGA, which is a hardware emulator that replicates an NES. Its emulation for this game is 100% accurate, which means that anything that can be done on an NES is possible on it. Keyboard offers no advantage, and it is actually debatably worse for speedrunning this game, which is why I swap to controller for 8-4. I use keyboard over controller for the rest of the game for personal preference reasons, I have been playing games on keyboard since a little kid, and I have a very good feel for it compared to controller. Another misconception is that some people think I am able to input L+R using a keyboard. It is possible to do so, but since it isn’t possible with a standard NES controller without it being broken or modified, inputting this is banned. I have the firmware modded in my keyboard settings that makes L+R input nothing, so no invalid input was done during this run. Hopefully this clears up any confusion, emulator / keyboard is a completely valid and legitimate way of speedrunning this game, and this is a verified run at

As a side note, for those concerned about my heartrate being high, my normal resting heartrate is ~70 BPM average. When I am doing runs and constantly getting some of them far, drinking caffeine, and streaming, it can occasionally linger over 100 BPM. Compared to my normal resting heartrate, this is a whole different thing, and doing speedruns isn’t a resting heartrate when nerves can skyrocket at any given time due to the pace. Hopefully this clears up any confusion, I am completely healthy and do not have any heart condition!

  1. Dude im an outsider to this community but when I saw super mario speedrun followed by WR post some hours ago… isnt this game almost to the point where top speedruns are basically machine perfect?

  2. This is simultaneously one of the most impressive, and hilarious speedruns I’ve ever gotten to see. Major congrats dude, no shame in embodying Mario, he’s the GOAT, and so are you.

  3. Niftski might be the greatest gamer of our generation. I’ve been involved in so so many communities and it’s truly so rare to see domination like this in any game.
