How to Destroy Your Franchise’s Identity – Dead Space 2 and 3

Visceral Games’ short-lived time in the industry was a tumultuous one, marked by poor direction from a publisher who has no business pushing anything beyond sports games.

  1. Hey @TheSaltFactory, I feel like I'm losing my mind but did you ever have a video about Batman Arkham Knight? I've been trying to find a video that goes over that game and I have a memory that you had a video about it. Either way man, keep up the amazing work.

  2. 51:25 I love this part, Strauss is screaming and complaining about someone watching and staring at him and then right after he looks at the camera, at you, staring at him.

  3. Oh, about the physics and bugs in DS3: It's far worse.

Everything is tied to fps. So even 60fps cause funny flying corpses. 120 fps shakes up the game even more and unrestricted fps breaks the game.

As for weapons, it's even more disgusting. I use the needle gun repeater with the stasis coating augment in every game. DIY machine gun. Stasis fucks with corpses on high fps settings. The game turns into a circus. As if the weapon didn't turn every difficulty into easy mode, it also makes corpses perform the most ridiculous stunts with every kill, which kills the serious tone and horror atmosphere entirely.

  4. I played Dead Space 2 until the introduction of the toddlers.

After being ripped apart by those horrifying space zombies I turned off the game and ejected the disc, and traded it in the next day for credit towards something else.

No regrets on the purchase as I enjoyed the first game I'm just not that good with scary games and now this video will let me know what happened in the game.

  5. Imo the original Dead Space was the peak of the series. The plot was the most coherent, the "Marker" was used sparingly and the whole cosmic horror angle was not yet introduced. It all felt very thight and like the guys who worked on it knew what they wanted to do.
It gets messy with the sequels, especially 3 is just very bad with a few specks of gold in a mount of shit.
Atmosphere, location design and gameplay is also just the best in the original game, as are the animations and the designs for enemies.
When I want to replay a survival horror game, I usually just go with my slightly modded Dead Space (2008) and I know I'll have lots of fun. Even the graphics hold up super well nowadays when tweaking anti aliasing and adding DSR.

  6. Seriously, wtf is up with the PC port of DS3? I played it a lot on my PS3 and it worked just fine. It’s genuinely annoying hearing him bash the game for port issues when I want to hear about the core game, and it’s not even his fault. That port just SUCKS???

  7. Idk why I'm getting recommend dead space vids all of a suden, but I'm not going to complain.

Edit: 3:37 Deadspace 2 multiplayer was underrated especially when you got to play as the necromorths like in left 4 dead

  8. Dead Space 2 is a game I wanted to love as much as Dead Space 1, but the Worldbuilding and atmosphere weren’t as immersive because of the action set pieces. If they ever remake it, I sincerely just want them to reduce the enemy count and make certain set pieces like the elementary school longer

  9. 19:34 the mishmash could be commentary on the state of society in Dead Space and how Isaac is struggling to rejoin it? Psychologically speaking. His trauma violently perverting what he once considered safe, is now something that has stained everything in his life. Him getting closure ends the nightmare

Dead Space is also about late stage hypercapitalism. Opulent rich areas, grimy, industrial poor areas. It could be commenting on resource exploitation, with a slight environmental message. When things fail, nothing is sacred. Like an armed lifeboat. I mean, EarthGov is killing survivors. I really like the art direction and variety in DS2. It stays true to the industrial low fi sci fi from the original game and elaborating on civilian life. This world wasn't much better off before the necromorphs

  10. Recently I played all ds games and watched and read everything ds. People in comments praise ds2, but I must say it was a step down from horror to action. And this might be a good thing if you are into action.

Ds3 is actually bad even as action game, the worst things: enemy reaction to bullet (none), and non existing plot and characters. It’s just plain and stupid.

Amount of lore and world building in ds1+ book, comics, movies and extraction is phenomenal, every other game tried to make it grow wide, but not deep.

  11. I can't really hate DS3. It's just so fun to play. Love triangle? Stupid ass villain? Who cares when you can make a Rocket launcher that heals you and sets everything on fire

  12. Dead space is the asian original
dead space 2 is the american sequel
dead space 3 is the american reboot nobody asked for
Also, i absolutely despise the art style change between 1 and 2, i know some people throw the argument of "oh but its on a advanced space station" or "oh but its been 4 years" but im going to be brutally honest its just cope. you can even find the ds1 suits in 2 and they look completely different, nothing like the original and still have the folding helmets.

  13. You did it, you goddamn did it. You make the best video essays sometimes I want to understand what you say about gameplay but I love watching your videos. Keep doing God's work and Happy Halloween 🎃 🙏

  14. One thing I found interesting about the deadspace remake is how they had to recton how markers worked in 1 to fit with the later games, effectively writing the literal effect of "Dead space" from dead space. Given, the purpose of markers in 1 was that they effectively made space dead for whatever had the genetic code written on their surface, so it was like a warning beacon that kills the things it warned you against back there. – The original one buried deep in a hard to get text log, not the one they say out loud of course.

That bit of lore was removed in the remake given it has limited continuity with 2/3, so while the remake was good, the original namesake of the series did genuinely actually die in that remake for the sake of validating the later games.

I do find it interesting that in some places I've run into people claiming 2013 EA was a very laissez faire publisher that didn't really manipulate its studios at all when you could see in weekly articles their "All studios must have multi" investor meetings and them constantly kicking out writers and reshuffling them if you lived in the years where EA was turning into a company you should never do business with. Like there is evidence of great systematic failure there, (As the interview in the end shows, not EVERYONE was hostile to the changes that lead to games like 3 getting made, but given the rotation of writers and people asking not to be in the credits, there is also evidence to the contrary of higher level issues of staff seeing things go off the tracks as well.)
