In today’s episode, it’s finally time to pay my respects on the original Metroid Prime! I loved this game for over twenty years, but admittedly, it’s kinda hard recommending it! Let’s talk about it.

  1. I feel like prime remasterred is a hair's breath away from being the definitive version of the game, but unfortunately the controls being 95% perfect, the weird prefire thing your cannon does when you charge your beam, and the thermal visor being fuzzy af for some reason make me believe the primehack version is just the best.

  2. I love 100%ing this game. It really helps with not making the artifact quest a slog because there's a lot of power-ups I can snag when revisiting areas with my new arsenal. Can NOT say the same for Prime 4, but I blame that game's lack of connectivity for making routing around the maps unfun/uninteresting. I can 100% this game within 6 hours, but mostly because Prime Remastered has the luxury of retaining everything you've scanned in a save file when you do additional playthroughs; I already got 100% scans on the first playthrough so all additional playthroughs I just do pure collectathon gameplay. I hope a Prime 2/3 remaster retains this because I like not worrying about scans.

  3. Yeah all that scanning does get to you. For some reason scanning in Prime 4 takes longer than in P1 Remastered, which made a somewhat mediocre game feel even worse.

Now that Kensuke Tanabe has stepped down I seriously hope Risa Tabata + Retro rethink the whole scanning mechanic. At least for contraption switches on machinery, please just let us press A or something for immediate activation, especially if we need to interact with it several times.

Also Tanabe was the one who wrote the lore bits and scattered them around the map right? Just revamp the entire thing – his text was often tedious and their placement felt inorganic. Like, why would a historical record of some conflict be found on the wall of a lava flow control room? One metroidvania that did lore text much better was Prince of Persia Lost Crown, it had diary entries and artifacts in believable places like the library or prison, and the tone and cadence of the text made them actually feel like they were written by different authors. Please just hire actual writers next time.

  4. its funny but i bounced off prime the first time i played then i played echos loved it and went back and completed prime 1 and ended up loving it as well

  5. 3:33 y’know that’s super valid. Tho usually when games are marathoned in one big video, they tend to put less focus and emphasis on each game.

Like a somecallmejohnny video on a game is very a very thorough and top-to-bottom endeavor, while big marathon all-in-one videos I’ve tended to see usually end up making each segment on a game more casual and rapid-fire. Like if you started a big Johnny Marathon channel where you bunched up multiple of your vids into one mega upload, the video lengths would be ridiculous on some series (but honestly pretty great imo you should get on that especially if you offered like bonus commentary between segments, maybe foreshadowing, or updating details to stitch together videos as something for those going back. I’d listen the sht outta that even if it didn’t have those extra details)

I personally prefer your current style since I love your vibe and format, but it does kinda suck for your channel if the average viewer happens to have next to no interest on the series you’re reviewing. It kinda becomes an issue where for the next few weeks, months, or even a whole year could go by with many casual viewers just not being interested in the titles you’re tackling. Usually that gets solved by managing your “channel programing” and making sure you balance the uploads between stuff your average viewer would like, a marathon, and something unique you’re passionate on to bring more potential new viewers in. The only issue is the marathon schtick gets muddied that way but it still works as this ongoing series to tackle alongside other topics. Like a marathoned through all the good Call of Duty games recently but still played other titles in-between. It still counts imo! But hey man, if you’re happy in the lovely spot you seem to be at, nothing needs to change!

  6. Good to see this review pop up again… After a decade… Man.

Other than that, if you can Johnny during your Metroid Prime 2 revisit review, could you attempt to kill a Hunter Ing with the Darkburst? You only need to land the killing blow… And it kind of requires you to make a point-blank shot to kill it when it's health is about gone. But if you do you'll see a… Slightly unique death animation.

  7. 26:38 and this was when I realized I’m never gonna beat this game. The scanning was already testing my patience so the backtracking combined was a no-go for me. Map is too big and confusing.
