Mike Morasky, longtime composer at Valve Software, gave a talk with two other sound designers at Valve, about sound. During the Q&A section, Mike straight up just said “HLX.” HLX was said twice in the talk by two different people. Combine that with all the other information and news I’ve been gathering on HLX over the last few months, and you have a great episode of the HLX Files. Enjoy!

  1. Valve leaked HLX years ago in a CS2 update. The only thing that changed now is that someone inadvertently verbally admitted to having worked on it too. So what, we have the name of someone we can give the Guantanamo treatment to for info? If we assume this was just a genuine mistake, the game is still years off, minimum. They haven't announced it because they haven't made a product they're happy with yet, nor have they made enough of one to have even a rough idea of when it could be done by… or they know roughly when it will be done by, but it's like two or more years in the future.

But I don't know, Valve has been known to announce games in kinda sly ways before. I remember the Portal 2 announcement happening some kind of conference Gabe Newell was giving where he leaked it really sneakily in a staged Windows BSoD (a staged BSoD he also used as an opportunity to publicly trash Microsoft. What a legend.) It doesn't seem outlandish to suggest maybe that those leaks were on purpose just to hint towards a new project that's maybe pretty close to announcement, maybe within the next six or so months. Since E3 doesn't exist anymore, they need to find ways to get creative about that. It's not likely, but it's not impossible either. I'm not hyping up until Valve comes out and literally announces it with images and stuff.

  2. You do realize that Episode 3 and HL3 have been in development all the time, they just scratch it and start over from time to time, since Gabe isn't satisfied with the quality. That's why all these Youtubers can keep on creating videos about the upcoming HL3 from year to year. If we take a log from updates from 2008 it shows marks of Episode 3, but it was never released.
So wake up, you're just smelling the ashes of something that could've been but never was.
I will get my hopes up, when Valve releases a trailer or something. Before that, its just tinfoil.
