Hence the name "trans-atlantic" accent. Many actors from early major movies would also speak in the non-organic accent because it made easier for film Industries of both the US & UK, to present their films in each countries' cinema markets. It was to make it easier for audience to clearly under what was being said. Many people might have not been used to hearing foreign English accents (especially the much more difficult Regional accents found through both countries).

0:33 it’s a really cool story actually, basically the accent was never real to begin with, it was purely manufactured as this attention grabbing radio host voice, then of course it did its jobbed and grabbed plenty of attention, and the accent ironically slithers its way into becoming how some people really spoke, more prevalent in certain areas like chicago and new york (higher population equals more entertainment and broadcasting that’s reaching more people) until it slowly dies off as our country evolved because well, it wasn’t a real ethnic accent to begin with, so it died off as entertainment and the world changed with it. (like that chatter said in tts it died off as america started focusing more on hollywood and whatnot)
fun fact to anyone who read this far! while it was meant to grab attention, the actual reason behind the thought process was that microphones were much lower quality and it was harder to understand, the trans atlantic accent focuses on very strong enunciation to ring out those words so listeners can hear it, because remember, this all started as audio so you needed to make sure no one missed a word.
