It is a dark, realistic military thriller featuring huge battles, shocking betrayals,
The story
After acquiring intelligence concerning a number of attacks on military bases in Europe, Ghost joins a new special forces squad; the attacks seem to have been carried out by a ruthless enemy commander called Viktor Sokolov.
The mission of Ghost is simple, that is to find Sokolov and prevent him from starting a war.
However, following a number of operations, Ghost realizes that Sokolov has been able to predict each and every move of the squad. Someone must be providing him with classified information, and as a result, Ghost starts to suspect one of his own team members.
Mission summaries
1. Ghost's team launches an attack on a mountain compound in order to capture Sokolov, but Sokolov escapes after telling them that Ghost has been looking for the wrong person.
2. In Steel Ocean, a Ghost hijacks a Blackthorn military destroyer and then uses the ship's weapons to launch an attack on another enemy warship during a large sea battle.
3. Hostile Terrain — Ghost proceeds through the city while a major battle is taking place in order to rescue an undercover agent who is carrying evidence against Sokolov.
4. There's No Way Out — the rescue operation goes wrong and Ghost has to protect his injured squad as the enemy forces attack from all directions.
5. The Betrayal — There are indications that Jack, Ghost's most recent and closest teammate, has been secretly collaborating with the enemy.
6. The Forgotten — Ghost and his squad enter a secret prison camp in Eastern Europe with the aim of rescuing captured soldiers and civilians. Upon doing so, they find that the prisoners have been tortured, starved and have been erased from the official records. In a concealed underground area they locate witnesses to the conspiracy who had been imprisoned in order to keep the truth hidden. Ghost battles to set hundreds of prisoners free and manages to escape with a high-ranking officer who knows who framed him.
7. Blackout — Ghost launches an attack on a power station in order to avoid a citywide blackout which would allow the enemy forces to take control.
8. Behind Enemy Lines — Ghost enters an enemy-run military base by posing as a prisoner of war.
9. The Truth — Ghost finds out that Sokolov has been attempting to reveal a secret operation carried out by his own side.
10. Broken Trust — Ghost deals with Jack, who then admits that he has been concealing something regarding their first mission.
11. The Manhunt — Ghost is made the most wanted soldier in the country after he is framed for having betrayed his military, and he has to escape the large-scale military pursuit without leaving the civilians who are caught in the fighting.
12. Crossfire — The two armies are getting ready to fight, and Ghost has to prevent a wrong order from causing a devastating attack.
13. The Insider — Ghost finds out that the person who has been providing intelligence to Sokolov has been manipulating both sides.
14. The Final Stand — Ghost and his squad defend a military headquarters that has been surrounded while attempting to get the truth across.
15. There's no turning back — Ghost finally faces the true mastermind and discovers the reason why he was selected for the operation.
In 16, Ghost carries out a final attack in order to prevent the mastermind from causing an international war.
The massive twist
Sokolov wasn't the genuine villain; it was because someone wanted him dead before he could come out with the truth that he became Ghost's target.
The true mastermind is the senior intelligence officer who personally gave Ghost the mission; they have been causing conflicts between the nations in order to secretly take control of military decision-making throughout Europe.
The most surprising thing was that Ghost's team had been deliberately put together since each member could be made out to be responsible for a different aspect of the conspiracy; their missions had been planned with the aim of making it appear as if they were rogue soldiers should the truth ever come to light.
Following the rescue from the prison camp, the high-ranking officer makes it clear that Ghost's intelligence contact had actually given their personal approval for the secret programme. Now Ghost realises that the people giving him orders are the same ones trying to destroy him.
In the ending, Ghost has to decide if he should carry out his last instructions or go against them by exposing the conspiracy. His squad, in turn, must decide whether to support him even if the entire military orders them to hunt him.
