I always have a hard time drawing the thing and not the symbol of the thing. One trick I was taught that works for me at least is to draw the negative shape of the object. Don't draw the squirrel, draw everything around the squirrel. That way you get the actual shape of the squirrel without your brain fixating on the idea of a squirrel.
I enjoy that they just got done talking about impressions and then Dan inadvertently does a perfect John Mulaney.

It is wild that I am VERY recently thinking to get back into drawing after many a times of getting discouraged, thank you Arin I'm gonna try again!!

My favorite example of drawn symbols clashing is probably little kids drawing cars and streets. A street is obviously two parallel lines with a segmented line in the middle. And a car is this rectangle with another smaller rectangle above, resting over a couple of circles. When a kid draws and puts both of them together you get a bird's eye view of a street, and a sideview of a car. Two symbols created from completely different vantage points coexisting in a drawing. I think is so charming.

When I draw things like fur or hands or anything at all without a reference, it’s done in a way that I am drawing what I conceptually know as how fur works lol
Which, ultimately, is just a more complex symbol for me bc TF you MEAN people can see ACTUALLY visualize things??? lol
House symbol is just | | with wide triangle above to connect the | | and a vertical rectangle in the middle
But realism house is also just a bunch of lines, too and they hold the same meaning to me, one is just reduced down like a balsamic vinegar reduction 🙂
I do great from reference tho, which I think is neat

I stopped watching game grumps for awhile but hearing you guys have such a lovely little chat and Arin being so encouraging is really nice. It nice knowing you can tell the friendship is genuine and not just for show like some podcasts and youtubers are sometimes. Thats not to tear others down though but more just its really refreshing coming back to this channel and hearing how healthy the friendship is without knowing more beyond this and the kingdom hearts episodes lately! Also wishing Dan well on continuing his art journey!! I wanna see him draw some last unicorn fanart
