This same team made The Rogue: Prince of Persia and it’s definitely worth your time if you like roguelites. The traversal feels amazing
Great review, but someone else needs to read it. This dude is like a British Ben Stein. I'm falling asleep.
Whaaaah? I was convinced this wouldn’t review super well or would be polarizing. Many people that reviewed the demo said it wasn’t Castlevania. I had hoped they were wrong…
Gotta love seeing Castlevania back on top!!!!
I’m nabbin this one on the switch 2
Looks a lot like Aeterna Noctis
Pre-ordered the physical NS2 cart. Full game is in the cart.
What a Horrible Night to Have a Crush…
Hyped!
Been gaming since 1988, and playing Castlevania just as long. I intensely disagree with this review, which I feel is unrealistically positive and full of hyperbole. I feel like the majority of people who are around 40-60 who grew up with the 8-Bit, 16-Bit and 32-Bit Castlevania games when they were new (not decades later) in that vacuum – are likely not gonna enjoy this game as much as some of the DS offerings, let alone Rondo of Blood or SOTN.
I was given an early access code on PC, and the whole affair reminded me of Dead Cells meets Bloodstained. Certainly more so than Super Castlevania IV, or Dawn of Sorrow. It's a 'modern-style' metrovania, more than an authentic iggyvania. So yes, it's technically a Castlevania for sure – but it feels like a cheap clone, more than a actual polished classic Castlevania experience.
As a result my own detailed review won't be nearly as glowing.
The hit boxes feel a bit off, some of the animations too long for their own good, game balance isn't the best, there is some weird issues tied to the animation and fps on PC in the build I finished (similar to some 2D unity games), and the controls don't feel nearly as tight as the Castlevania games of the past prior to Shadows.
This is a solid game, and in some ways it follows the treatment of Shinobi recently – but unlike that game, Belmont's Curse doesn't quit live up to the lofty peaks of many of the prior games. It's fine, but everything from the controls, art style, animations, and even level design – it seems 'cheaper', than a mainline Castlevania.
The loving pixel art, the tight controls, the meticulous Boss battles, and the iconic levels …they are replaced with that feels like a modern indie game. Cheap, respectful to the source, fundementally changes many things to be QOL for non veterans, giant spirits that feel like they are a unity asset, levels that feel like they would be at home in a rogue lite, and combat that feels clunky and ripped straight out of Dead Cells.
Infact: this whole game, Castlevania Belmont's Curse, feels like it started its life as a Dead Cells game reskinned. It very much builds on the Castlevania DLC present in that game. And for a OG Castlevania fan who preferred the Castlevania III style more than the Metrovania design, this is SO FAR away from that. And fails to even live up to most the iggyvania entries later.
Honestly, while this is a solid game, and a serviceable Castlevania – it fails to even match the Curse of the Moon games, in capturing that feeling of a actual Castlevania. This very much feels like it was made for Gen Z people who aren't attached to the series that is much older than them, and the games that released before they were even born…
People who enjoyed Dead Cells, maybe played the Castlevania DLC for it, and are looking to re experience that with some more polish. This is just that. A solid 7.0 out of 10 game that doesn't feel like it's roots are Castlevania at all, but rather Dead Cells with the Castlevania aesthetic and story bolted on top.
But this Belmont's Curse fails to live up to the highs of the franchise which it's name bears, and feels very much like it's not designed to even match those games.
Similarly to Capcoms recent Onimusha Way of the Sword, this entry sets a tone that it's trying to appeal to a younger audience at the expense of the established fans expectations. While some of the DNA and many themes are present that will instantly be recognizable to the older crowd – This ISN'T your dad's Castlevania, even though it's 2D and has Trevor Belmont in it.
Unlike the reviewer here, I don't think this game is "the peak", has the "best combat of any Castlevania game" or "the best combat of ANY 2D action game. Period". It's Far-Far-Far from it. I have to question what this guy was smoking to claim it's better than any 2D action game ever in almost half a century of them? Are you kidding me?! 😲
I am excited for this game!
Wow, didn't expect this high score, awesome.
Day one for me.
but what about the switch version?
Yeah sorry I don’t believe this is a 10😂
It was actually Catlevania II: Simon's Quest from which we get the protmanteau metroidvania
>"Is The Series At Its Best"
>the least Castlevania game of all Castlevania games after Lords of Shadow
>"Is The Series At Its Best"
Are you saying Classicvania and Igavania gameplay are bad? And that modern Metroivania gameplay is better? Because Belmont's Curse doesn't feel like a Castlevania game AT ALL.
It feels more like Dead Cells, Blasphemous or Hollow Knight.
It's not a bad a game, but it's not a Castlevania game, not even close.
Bloodstained is the real Castlevania new game.
…brain tickling…
Didn't like the demo. Doesn't feel like Castlevania to me. I think imma pass on this or wait toll there is a discount. Better games coming out soon I'm more interested in getting
Except when it's on Switch on 30 FPS
This game is so low budget and cheap. Visuals are awful
Jeez, we have a new challenger to Rob Brydon’s “tiny man in a box” impression.
Our boy isaac is back as his true self
Just passing out 10s like it’s candy.
Konami have just flexed MGS, Castlevania and Silent Hill successfully. New golden age?
Whoa….up there with SOTN?!
I’m doing my first Dead Cells runs and once I finish that OOOOO BOY IM COMIN FOR YOU CASTLEVANIA
As long as this gets us a new season of castlevania on Netflix then i like it
Ball is in your court, team behind the other best metroidvania of all time Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown… oh wait, Ubisoft closed them right after they dropped one of the best games ever made…
I am a die-hard Castlevania fan… and I played the demo. It wasn't bad, BUT THIS IS NOT a true Castlevania game… y'all can make all the excuses you want for it… But it doesn't even feel like Castlevania… BUT I will admit THE GAMEPLAY IS SOLID
Review by Steve Watts? Video is Tam?
0:36 This statement right here is how I know the reviewer is gassing this game up.😑 Combat don’t even look as good as Strider or PoP LC. 🤨Fanboy review…
I wish the art were more like that of Blasphemous.
The channel that thinks every game is a 10
This MIGHT be one of the few good games in this horrible year of gaming.
I don’t know if this is worth $40, but at least Konami aren’t as greedy as Nintendo charging full-price for Metroid. These kinds of games really shouldn’t be above $35 at most. Still wish they did another 3D Castlevania instead. 2D Metroidvania’s are far from special anymoreZ
