Subnautica 2 | Voyage to Early Access 2 – Beyond the Surface

In the first episode of our Voyage to Early Access 2 series, Narrative Designers Seth Dickinson and Tim Partlett, along with Creative Director Anthony Gallegos, explore storytelling’s role in shaping Subnautica 2’s latest content update.

They’ll provide a glimpse at what’s next for the Colonists’ story, the growing history of the Axum, the power of letting players piece the story together through exploration, and how this update connects back to the Collector Leviathan.

  1. Besides new stuff, in terms of changes the two biggest things I think the game absolutely needs is the current Collector locations don't make sense and they feel like they're there just to make a challenge for the player and make exploration slower, it just feels like they shouldn't be there. And what makes that worse is the blaring music that plays when the Collector or Shiver is hunting you. It removes absolutely all of the fear that could come from the experience. All of the suspense and uneasiness that comes from swimming in the middle of the water, you can't see anything else but the water around you, all of that uneasiness and suspense is gone once you hear that music that just tells you that something is there. Trust me I love this game and I dont want to sound negative, but I think those two things are huge issues that the game needs to be change 🙂

  2. one thing that always amazed me in subnautica was how believable it all were. fantasy aside, it makes SENSE for all the ones that lived there before us either died or left.

  3. When will the update content start rolling out? How much longer do we have to wait? The game came out in May, and it’s already October. You’re working at a snail’s pace. In Grounded 2, there’s an update every season. Like many others, I’m losing interest in the project.

  4. Дайте глубину более 2 километров , и обязательно атмосферное погружение .

  5. My biggest critique/criticism is that the environment is incredibly static. The plants don't wave with the currents, and things don't interact as you get near them… they all just rest, in what is clearly just a pushed-out render. It looks good in a screenshot, but in motion there is nothing going on. I'm pretty sure that even Subnautica 1 had these basics in place, and that's something I would expect as a baseline in a new, 2026 game (even if it is early access – like, I can get Claude to code me an underwater game with environmental physics in an hour). I mean, Witcher 3 in 2015 had realistic physics for plants, Crysis 2 in 2011 and Far Cry 3 in 2012 had foliage interaction… Battlefield V in 2018 had incredibly immersive sims for particle physics that reacted with your surroundings. I'm just not seeing any of that sort of tech here in these showcases and it makes the game feel very last-gen and, frankly, lazy. The concepts are cool and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next, but the underlying tech here is very, VERY underwhelming for what we should expect from a property like this in today's age. Nothing looks alive other than bespoke things like reactive bubbles and the leviathan. All of the plants just… stay there., and the terrible frame rate does not help sell this dev log. No joke, a single prompt from AI would sell this far better, and that's kinda sad. But maybe people are just fine with the status quo.

  6. This is really looking great. It's really wonderful to see how much care and attention the team is putting into building a believable world. Little details like fauna hiding from The Collector go such a long way.

Super excited to see what comes next! Thanks for these vlogs, it's really interesting to see some of the thought processes behind the decisions made.

  7. 2:17 he is 100% correct about this. Each piece of lore discovered adds up over time into this crescendo of a "holy crap" moment. Our imagination is allowed run free to fill in the blanks with each piece added and creates such a deeper connection with the world, characters, and story.

  8. Looks like the big things we are getting is the prawn (frog) suit, new biome, depth increase to 800 meters, and the start of the precursor lore. Which knowing how sub zero went they are probably gonna go heavy on. Otherwise didnt see anything else of true note pop out, There looked to be a few new resources (about 4 I noticed) but otherwise I dont think well see much expansion to gameplay outside of narrative here. TLDR very story focused update this go around which will be interesting.
