fun fact: it's not just deion with the middle of nowhere gas stations. there's actually a term for places like that, that are meant only as a place that you're eventually going to leave and thus give you a weird inbetween worlds feeling. it's called 'liminal spaces' and includes things like laundromats, airports, gas stations like these or truck stops.
