Elden Ring, Hollow Knight, Silksong, WoW, and basically every RPG other than D&D uses fantasy town. Why? What happens when you worldbuild for DnD without towns in mind?
Wild Hearth is Ending!
The Wild Hearth campaign is ending in a matter of HOURS. Making Dungeons and Dragons combat AND downtime as excited as it can possibly be is the ethos behind the now THREE books of Wild Hearth, which are compatible with both 5e (2014) and 5.5e (2024).

If you click "Notify Me" you'll get notified when that live stream starts (in the right timezone lol)!
See you there! Be there or be square!

The Hat lets you play video games??? Wow.
Also was there an error or something with the speed or timing in editing? There’s parts where you seem to be speaking at like 4x normal for a few seconds like it got speeded up. I thought it was just you speaking faster than usual but it’s so fast it’s almost garbled. I don’t think it’s just you speaking faster than usual. 🤷♂️
Still love the video.
I've kept thinking "people are exaggerating, we're just back with a lot of topics that had been put in a backlog while uploads slowed down" but I'm beginning to think I'm on the "please take a rest" camp xP
I've been playing satisfactory recently, and the concept of home is so important. You need to explore to find more resource nodes, floating orbs and cool S's, but after every long trek through the wilderness, there is something so comforting about coming home safe, about getting back to the concrete and spaghetti of the conveyor belts going everywhere so you can see how much your factory has progressed since you left. It's the balance of adventure/excitement and coming home to safety. Too much time in base and safety? well, you just optimized a whole bunch of supply lines and need to give it some time to produce the parts you need to progress in the tech tree so you might as well go explore.
Hell, I think you just explained why Factorio is so tiring for me
I know it isnt a Fantasy town, but a game i believe gives a good from safe to nature to safe again is cult of the lamb, even though its not really that stressful, the game loop is kinda similiar. I recommend the game for everyone, have a good day 🙂
Love from mars
ok having seen the whole video now, maybe it's due to personal experiences, but silksong didn't feel like that to me, i remember finding the game harrowing until i saved bellhome, the game became way more bearable, and later i had the same feeling about the first shrine, and the nomadic flea camp.. they do all have that same feeling of being fleeting places, due to how the world functions and the omnipresent danger to any home, but i guess i just don't naturally expect home to be permanent, it's a place to linger while it lasts.
Best way to ruin any ttrpg section is to play FATAL, even in "roleplay" ones
Will Wild Hearth books include an actual full campaign (with like NPCs, combat encounters, locations and a story) or only adventure leads or textually described adventures?
halfway into the video in and… the round table hold, how are we taking this long ignoring the round table hold? 😅
I think my sense of home is broken… thanks mom
Jenny My GOAT
And that's why the Majula Village in Dark Souls 2 is so good, just like the village in Ashen : it IS home, and it evolves along with your adventures.
15:41 Sir Hat, why the hell is your camera shaking in this close up? I instinctively braced myself for Skull Tyrant to appear and that was NOT chill!! excellent editing, intentional or not, underlining your point about safety
I think you'd like the Hunter's Dream from Bloodborne much more than the other souls games then.
7:00 why (even though the player count was already bleeding) a lot of players really disliked the addition of the "portal" when the Edge of Fate DLC launched. It removed a need to visit The Tower and see the NPCs there. It removed that social space.

Pointy Hat: Too soon?
Me: YES! >:T (jk… not as bitter… but still a little salty about it…)
I love the timing of this; our party is currently in my wizard's home town where he is somehow a wanted criminal. The exact opposite of the safety you'd expect.
Given his backstory and reason for being there, it makes sense.
Our true safe place is the town we saved from destruction. Good old Phandelin.
In my youtube it says the Live is planned for 17:00 CEST, is that just when the chat opens and stuff?
idk Elden is hella overrated like I enjoyed more running through DS 3 for the 3rd time more. And I never opened Elden after getting all the achievements. The same is for my friends
Take a break!
This can’t be healthy.
A Wild Hearth ad directly under this video, I feel like the universe is telling me something…
Edit: All right, you got me, you handsome scoundrel of a hat
20:40 ….never… ever play that voice again ._.;;;
Bastions. I know this is partly an ad for your Kickstarter – which is completely fair – but still this is intended as a useful video for D&D. It's disappointing that a video about safe towns that can be built and developed didn't even mention the Bastion mechanics
I know you mentioned all fromsoft games are like that, but my mind kept going to fire link shrine from dark souls 1 for basically every point you made here about Fantasy Towns. Big recommendations for that if folks haven't tried it.
Huuh, is that why i felt at ease with Ranni in her towers? Because thats is a place of safety in Elden ring.
Thx for this! Love ur channel! 🙂
Neverwinter Nights had so many in town/city quests, and you don't go into the wild many, many hours into the game. The city of Neverwinter is a beautiful place, though, so it's worth it.
I've always hated this about The Fromsoft games. You save the world and yet there's nothing worth saving. You become Elden Lord but lord of what? A dead and destroyed kingdom full of monsters? Well you fix the Elden Ring in every ending (except the ones where you don't) so people can die properly now. I guess. Make the land even more barren than ever. The best fantasy worlds are the ones where you'd want to live in, want to save for more reasons than "If I don't then I have no game to play"
GOD… this was heavy… 18:40 This is a video about DND truly!
I would like to discuss how you could use a Fantasy Town in Curse of Strahd. I know it's the point of the dread feeling that no village in Barovia is safe, but I feel like my players are really stressed because of this and they probably long for this "place to linger".
it is annoying how many kickstarter things are ONLY available from the kickstarter. do not be like that.
The hub world in Super Mario Galaxy always felt like home to me.
This Kickstarter has come so far! Due to timezones and work, I might not make it to the stream, but I hope there will be a vod for a bit after^^
As I commented to someone else, moogles in ffxi/Vana'diel is home and safety to me. Sure we have an add-on scenarios where we fight the moogle mafia, but aside from that, moogles only appear in safe settlements.^^ that and there is always a moogle in in your(rent free) mog house and garden.^^
Hmm, so in Curse of Strahd the closest thing to one of these safe spaces to linger might be something like the town of Vallaki, or at least the inn in it.
S.M.A.R.T. Specific, measurable, achievable, relative and timely. Wowsers my decade+ as a manager comes back as a vivid dream.
It's kinda funny, my current group hates staying in a "safe space". They stay in a town or city only long enough to get a rest and buy items before getting on with the quest or picking up a new one.
Huh… Baldurs Gate 3 camp…
14:52 it isnt dirtmounth, but it is a Fantasy Town, especially since you go and build a house in there, it also helps since its basically in the smack middle of the map.
I swear, this video was about DnD.
did u already record it faster? sounds awefull
This video didn't have a Fantasy Town.
No pause, no break
I've felt your video will get to the Wild Hearth (building a town!) from the first mention of "home" and "safety" in the script. Anyways, there's a lot to think for a DM so thank you for all work you do for the community!
Was that Jacob Budz/Xp to level 3?
Adrianne Avenicci was a hostage held against all of us waiting for the first vampire or cultist to come and take her out, and she died by your hand. Skyrim once again is the best game ever made
I'd argue that a line isn't a place to linger, but to wait. It's silly semantics but I feel like lingering is a deliberate act, you choose to stay when you should be moving on, where as waiting in a line is still part of the activity, you are made to linger I suppose, but I feel like those are different states.
