  1. THE ENTIRE FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S LORE

⚠️ FNAF’s timeline is confusing, and some details are still debated by fans!

William Afton and Henry Emily are associated with the beginnings of Fazbear Entertainment. Their early restaurant, Fredbear’s Family Diner, features Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, animatronics that can also function as wearable springlock suits.

    THE BITE OF ’83

William’s youngest son, commonly called the Crying Child, is bullied by his older brother Michael. On his birthday, Michael and his friends shove his head into Fredbear’s mouth as a prank. Fredbear bites down, fatally injuring him. The game ends with the words “I will put you back together.” What ultimately happens to the Crying Child remains debated.

    CHARLIE AND THE PUPPET

William murders Charlotte Emily, Henry’s daughter, outside a restaurant. The Security Puppet reaches her body and collapses beside her. Charlie goes on to possess the Puppet, becoming one of the key spirits connected to the haunted animatronics.

    THE MISSING CHILDREN INCIDENT

William wears the Spring Bonnie suit to lure children into a back room and murder them. The five children commonly associated with the original animatronics are Gabriel (Freddy), Jeremy (Bonnie), Susie (Chica), Fritz (Foxy), and Cassidy (commonly associated with Golden Freddy). Their spirits become connected to the animatronics, turning Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza into a nightmare.

    CIRCUS BABY AND ELIZABETH

William creates the Funtime animatronics, including Circus Baby, Funtime Freddy, Funtime Foxy and Ballora. Elizabeth ignores her father’s warning to stay away from Baby and is killed by the animatronic’s hidden capture mechanism. Elizabeth’s spirit becomes associated with Circus Baby.

FNAF 2 AND THE BITE OF ’87

In 1987, a new Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza opens with the Toy animatronics and the older, damaged Withered animatronics. The “SAVE THEM” minigame hints at more murders. Security guard Jeremy Fitzgerald works at the restaurant, and the infamous Bite of ’87 occurs. The victim survives but suffers a severe brain injury. Mangle is a popular suspect, but the games never conclusively identify the attacker. The restaurant closes and the Toy animatronics are scrapped.

    FNAF 1

Around 1993, Mike Schmidt—widely believed to be Michael Afton using an alias—works the night shift at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy and Golden Freddy behave aggressively at night. Phone Guy’s recordings reveal the disturbing rules of surviving the job. Mike survives but is fired, and the restaurant eventually closes.

    WILLIAM BECOMES SPRINGTRAP

William returns to the abandoned restaurant and dismantles the original animatronics. The children’s spirits confront him, so he hides inside the Spring Bonnie suit. Its springlocks fail, crushing him inside. He becomes Springtrap and is sealed away in a hidden room. Somehow, William refuses to stay dead.

    SISTER LOCATION

Michael goes underground to investigate the facility housing the Funtime animatronics and find Elizabeth. The animatronics combine into Ennard and use the Scooper to hollow out Michael’s body so they can disguise themselves as him. After Ennard leaves his body, Michael somehow survives and vows to find his father. Ennard later splits, with Baby becoming Scrap Baby and the remaining animatronics forming Molten Freddy.

    FNAF 3

Decades later, a horror attraction called Fazbear’s Fright discovers Springtrap and brings him inside. The night guard must survive Springtrap and hallucinations based on the old animatronics. The attraction catches fire, but William’s fate remains uncertain. The minigames also suggest the children’s spirits may be released through Happiest Day.

    PIZZERIA SIMULATOR

Henry Emily creates a fake pizzeria to gather the remaining threats: Scraptrap (William), Scrap Baby (Elizabeth), Molten Freddy and Lefty, which contains the Puppet and Charlie. Henry reveals his plan and sets the building on fire, hoping to free the spirits and end the cycle. This is the major finale of the original Afton storyline.

    ULTIMATE CUSTOM NIGHT

William is trapped in a nightmare-like cycle of attacks from dozens of animatronics. A mysterious spirit described as “the one you should not have killed” appears determined to keep him suffering. Cassidy is a popular candidate for this spirit, although other interpretations exist.

    HELP WANTED

Fazbear Entertainment creates a VR game based on the old incidents. Scanned circuit boards introduce a strange digital rabbit entity called Glitchtrap. Vanessa becomes entangled in its influence and takes on the identity of Vanny. Fans originally interpreted Glitchtrap as William returning digitally, but later Mimic-related revelations complicated that theory.

    SECURITY BREACH

The Mega Pizzaplex opens as a huge entertainment centre. Gregory becomes trapped inside overnight, and Glamrock Freddy helps him survive while the other Glamrocks hunt him. Vanessa and Vanny are tied to the mystery, and different endings reveal different possible outcomes.

    RUIN

Gregory’s friend Cassie enters the ruined Pizzaplex after hearing what seems to be Gregory asking for help. She uses a security mask and disables systems protecting a dangerous endoskeleton. The voice guiding her is actually the Mimic, which imitates Gregory and manipulates her into freeing it. The Mimic pursues Cassie, and her fate remains uncertain.

    SECRET OF THE MIMIC

The story explores the origins of the Mimic through inventor Edwin Murray and the abandoned Murray’s Costume Manor. The Mimic is a prototype endoskeleton capable of copying what it observes, including behaviours and appearances. It represents a different threat from Springtrap: a machine that learns by imitation.

    THE BIGGEST MYSTERIES

Golden Freddy and Cassidy: Their connection to William’s punishment is important, but Golden Freddy’s exact nature and the Crying Child’s role remain debated.

William’s return: The later rabbit-like villains may not all literally be William. The relationship between Glitchtrap and the Mimic is a major modern mystery.

The Crying Child: The meaning of FNAF 4’s nightmares and what ultimately happens to him remain uncertain.

    THE BOOKS AND MOVIE

The Silver Eyes, The Twisted Ones and The Fourth Closet tell a separate version of the story. Fazbear Frights and Tales from the Pizzaplex contain stories that may illuminate game concepts, but their exact relationship to game continuity is debated. The FNAF movie also has its own adaptation continuity.

THE ENTIRE LORE IN ONE SENTENCE:

William Afton helps build an animatronic entertainment empire, murders children, becomes trapped inside his own machinery, and leaves behind haunted robots and a broken family. Michael and Henry try to end the nightmare, but decades later Fazbear’s legacy returns through digital horrors and the Mimic’s terrifying ability to copy what it sees.

AND THAT’S HOW A GAME ABOUT WATCHING CAMERAS AND SAVING BATTERY BECAME A DECADES-LONG MYSTERY ABOUT MURDER, HAUNTED ROBOTS, FAMILY TRAGEDY, DIGITAL COPIES AND A RABBIT THAT REFUSES TO STAY DEAD.
