Lyrics:

If I couldn’t sing
How love’s the hardest easy thing
And if I couldn’t sing you my life
Hiding here in the spotlight
And if you couldn’t hear me
If I couldn’t feel
If I couldn’t feel your touch again
When nerve ends fray
And there’s nothing to say
Not even a prayer
It’s a beautiful night somewhere

Ohhh ohhh
If I couldn’t say it now
Tell me how
If this is love and love is all we’ve got
You can show me what it is
I can show you what it’s not
If this is love don’t act surprised when you get hurt
Even if our dreams lay in the dirt
We were once the greatest show on earth

Is that a smile or a tear?
Is it all show business here?
The cinema that is stained glass
You’re at the altar at our wedding mass
Is this a church of love or fear?
Have we made God feel like a stranger here?

Ohhh ohhh
Say it now
Tell me how
If this is love and love is all we’ve got
You can show me what it is
I can show you what it’s not
If this is love, we make cathedrals of our hurt
People digging their dreams out of the dirt
We were once the greatest show on earth

Love is a business that works at night
I sold myself for less than was right
You taught me what I was worth
In the greatest show on earth
Made a profession out of breaking your heart
You call it lies, I call it art
I was some of your best work
We were once the greatest show on earth
Love is a business you shouldn’t trust
Breathe on me and I’m love and I’m lust
Forever or a flirt?
The greatest show on earth
The light scatters things can get worse
These dark matters of the universe
Could not compete with us
We were once the greatest show on earth

  1. Welcome Back Guys! I hope the whole album is this beautiful. I wore out three cassettes of Joshua Tree in my car. The Unforgetable Fire was my introduction to U2, wore a couple of those out too. My Mother at age 55 at the release of Unforgetable Fire fell in love with it. We used to depart each other aka say good bye by saying "What more in the name of Love", then hug or hang up the phone. Through the years, put out an album, one or two bangers on each, but nothing like Joshua Tree or Unforgetable Fire. Fingers crossed for this new album. P.S. Bono, sing your protest songs, but don't spew your views on stage. Say it in a song.

  2. I have loved U2 when they first came out with Gloria, New Year’s Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday. Thank God for MTV back in the 80s that made many bands successful. This song could have fit perfectly with with or without you and where the streets have no name. I have never seen them after all these years. I am hoping that’s about to change. I would love to hear all their hits live and if this song is that great, I can imagine how the rest will sound. Beautiful song U2. I want to listen to this again ❤❤❤❤❤❤

  3. I wasn't sure whether I loved it at first, but a few hours later I listened again at a higher volume and I'm starting to love it. Like most U2 fans, my hopes and expectations are sky high, so all their new songs have to match the quality of the two E.P.s that came out this year, which is a big challenge because I thought they were both brilliant.

  4. i remember when i hear 1989, 14 years old, the first time the joshua tree and rattle and hum and makes me hungry for more U2 . bought an walkman to listen to the cassettes until the batteries were empty. today i own every album of U2 and i still listen to all of them. so this song definetly brought me back to my youth when my world was ok and have no sorrows.

  5. What a Song I Love U2 since Age 16 hear New Years Day in 1983 then in 85 UF album blew my mind – got every album every 4 years, 4 world tours popmart vertigo 360 degree & JT 30th anniv JT my fav album im reborn again this album 3 singles already im crying with joy as im reborn again – Addy

  6. They were, and will always be in my heart. I went to Live Aid as a boy and my life changed forever. My brother and I went to every tour, saw them in Ireland. Thanks for the memories and heres to the future.
