Netflix’s ‘NARNIA’ Trailer Has Big Red Flags | Reaction

We need to talk about Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Netflix film is out. We love Narnia and C.S. Lewis deeply on Geeky Stoics, and something is out of place here.

I don’t hate all of this trailer. There is plenty to like. But concerns remain and I’ll break them down.

Our breakdown of Gerwig vs Aslan and Christianity

  1. I’m less bothered by the rock opera feel (with some steampunk ish aesthetics). I’ll be more bothered if the STORY doesn’t remain faithful to telling the Bible stories Lewis intended them to tell.
    TMN was creation.
LWW was the crucifixion and resurrection.

Narnia is the gospel if it were to happen in another world. Aslan is basically Jesus and how he would manifest in Narnia is as a lion.

If they do not faithfully maintain those elements, then this series is a failure.

  2. I think Aslan is voiced by a woman because the director is sexist and can't stand the idea of having a figure of good be male, especially when the story has a fundamentally evil figure that's a woman.

The reason they don't feature Streep's voice is so people don't generate negative buzz. They just need Christians to be quiet long enough for the movie to come out and then they don't need to patronize us anymore because they hope their key jangling with special effects will have won over the common denominator.

  3. Btw "Ciarán Hinds" name is not pronounced 'Sih-ree-un'.

    It's pronounced 'Kee-ran' or 'Kee-run'.

It's an Irish Gaelic name which is commonly Anglicised as 'Kieran'. Pronounced the same way. Ciarán is quite a common name in the UK, especially Scotland and Northern Ireland.

  4. It looks incredibly visually stunning, and I may watch it just for that. But yeah I'm a little worried about the whole Aslan and Meryl Streep thing

  5. Typical Hollywood
Take an IP and hire someone that has no respect for it.
In this case a none Christian to make a Christian based movie.
This will probably be better then WOT or ROP but still a butchering of the ip.

  6. Excuse me, are you by chance a fan of the NieR series? The typography for your channel logo is eerily similar to the franchise's typography.

Plus, the Emil head-looking thing on the "O" of StOics.
Edit: nvm, it's the Death Star. I just realized that after a closer look.

  7. Hmmm that's an interesting idea to have her voice blended. But if thats the case they're leaning hard into rage bait by only saying Meryl Streep is Aslan. It seems like Ciaran Hinds (I believe it's pronounced like Kieran) is probably playing future Diggory

  8. I agree Meryl Streep is a mistake. But I think the trailer looks really good and gives me hope this might be a faithful adaptation. That glimpse of creation with the roaring Aslan gave me goosebumps!

  9. I find it interesting that they chose Stairway to Heaven as the theme song. Some people call it satanic. Not sure I agree with that, but I wonder how much of that played into their decision…

  10. If the Lewis family is not happy with this adaptation, they shouldn't have sold the rights to Netflix in the first place…what kind of company did they think Netflix was? the Majority of Netflix executives donate money to the Democrat Party and support left wing causes. Do Christian people not research anything?

  11. Intriguing.

I have so many questions about this film. I like most of what I see so far. But there are so many questions circling around the actual message of the film.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Great video breakdown, by the way.

  12. I really liked the trailer, I think the aesthetics and everything can be discussed, but in my opinion ot brings more color and I think I will really enjoy the rock opera story, rather than a medieval aesthetic. Also I think that maybe this may not have being made for older generations, and maybe to talk a little more with the younger one's. However the song was perfect for this trailer, because there are many paralels with the story, but also, makes more paralels with the ocult, and symbolism with other religions and mythologies with similar aspects with the christian religion.

About Aslan, I see the problem for christians, and maybe her view is to bring Aslan to a perspective of "The Truth", and as they are refering to Aslan as He/him, I think they might keep this aspect and bring only the voice. However they could put Maryl Strip as Aslan's Father (only her voice) or something, and that I think might be too much even for more liberal religious people. It's a difficult balance for this story.

  13. I respect your opinion, but I really don't like the aesthetics at all. Nothing looks or feels remotely how I imagined it when my dad read it to me when I was a kid or when I read it again recently. I remember being genuinely awestruck and a little frightened by this story when I was 5-8 years old so this makes me a little sad.
