Let’s meet our hosts!
– Jake Baldino (aka the Before You Buy Guy) is pretty much the most watched reviewer on YouTube across both Gameranx and his personal channel ( If you’re obsessed with Delorians, The Mummy and Pizza you can discuss that stuff with him directly over on Twitter: @JakeBaldino

– Lucy James was a Senior Producer at Gamespot for more than a decade before striking out on her own, founding a newsletter and games discovery platform that serves up cool suggestions (and demo codes) directly to your inbox. She also co-hosts the annual Summer Games Showcase alongside Geoff Keighly.

– Skill Up used to work at McDonalds but he got fired for skimming too many chicken nuggets. He says he regrets it since he hasn’t had a better job since.

  1. People get easily confused about Bethesda.
Obsidian isn't a studio under Bethesda Game Studios.
They're a studio under the parent of BGS, which is Bethesda Softworks.
BGS and Bethesda Softworks are not the same thing.
Obsidian and BGS are more like sister studios now…

  2. Ace Combat is absolutely a Jake game and he just refuses to try it. I felt the same way about D&D and world of Warcraft. But I was wrong. They were both exactly what I wanted and didn’t know it.

    Jake needs to try it.

  3. Lucy, thank you so much for the Dressmaker recommendation in your newsletter! I picked it up, loaded into the first customer and then just sat my wife down at the computer. She has since played for almost 30 hours. I love when I am able to get her invested in games and this one has been perfect, she has been absolutely loving it and I would not have heard of it if not for you

  4. I have 0 sympathy of Halo Studio being laid off, they have made a shitty product for 15 years. I don't know why the video game's industry workers are the only ones that seem to receive "sympathy". If you go to a restaurant, the cheff servers shit for 15 years and he gets fired, noone would bat an eye.

  5. Have any critics played Control Resonant AFTER the patch yet? I'm just curious, because enemy sponginess is the #1 complaint I'm hearing in reviews, but the balance they're talking about is not the same one that actual consumers are playing. I'd be curious to know how much the patch would have changed their minds about it, because I personally think the combat and damage balance feels pretty good in the final game.

  6. I love how each of these guys have a distinct thing that switches them on and you can just see it 😂

Ralph with Destiny, Jake with Metal Gear and Lucy with some unknown cosy game made by one dude from Newcastle.

  7. I didn't realize they nerfed the Mr Tomasi fight. I did end up beating it and getting the platinum. I replayed Control a couple years later and was dreading the fight, and I beat it on my first try.

  8. For all their anachronistic practices and sometimes anti-consumer bull crap, Nintendo genuinely feels like the only one of these three big console makers with any momentum behind it. I was so excited about the idea of a Switch 2 before it was ever revealed, but all I can muster for the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation is either indifference or dread. Not to mention the cadence of games Nintendo is now pushing. Ocarina in November and new Metroid in January? Yes please!

  9. Lucy, in terms of destiny… we never left

But seriously, destiny had the shittest onboarding in history, so it needs this stuff to get the ground work in for new players and future content

  10. Xbox didn’t tell ninja theory to ‘make this type of game’ as stated by Skillup – they were given complete creative freedom by Phil Spencer. Their games weren’t popular (particularly Hellblade 2), reviewed poorly and were too expensive to maintain

  11. Taking away Halo from the Halo Studio is the perfect move imho. They had too many opportunities to make a good game but they failed horribly. On the other hand the Xbox has 3 FPS juggernauts in the house; id software, COD teams and Machine Games. I believe any one of these teams can make a better Halo game in comparison to what Halo Studio has done in the last decade. I really wish Machine Games had the opportunity.

  12. How Jake doesn't think Control Resonant is even a GOTY contender is beyond my comprehension and now I question all his reviews, honestly. There is nothing like this game, let alone 2026 games!

  13. I actually like the way that Control Resonant handles weapon upgrading. By the time that you have the materials to unlock a secondary weapon, upgrading that weapon to roughly the same point where your current one is power-wise is usually pretty negligible, since it's using materials that you probably have dozens of. It encouraged me to try the other weapons instead of just upgrading one and never experimenting! I can totally see your point though.

  14. Was this filmed before the Marathon update was laid out for December to March? I am not saying theyre getting past another year beyond March but it seems like they're committing to getting it into a place where more people are able to enjoy it.
